Physical Examinations: New York State Education Law requires All new entrants, Pre-K, K,  2nd, 4th, 7th & 10th graders receive a physical exam. This is vital to assure your child is growing and developing in a healthy manner. Students participating in our sports programs are required to have a current physical on file here in the Health Office. Physicals are valid for one year from the date they were given. See below for a physical form.

Immunizations: Official documentation of students immunizations must be on file at school. Please note that students entering Pre K are required to have 4 doses of pneumoccal conjugate vaccine and 4 doses of Haemophilus influenza type b. Children entering Kindergarten are required to have a second MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine and a second Varicella vaccine. Students who are eleven years of age or older are required to have a Tdap booster. Lastly, students in 7th and 8th grade are required to have one dose of  Meningococcal conjugate vaccine. Please see below for the 2017-2018 New York State Immunization Requirements for school attendance.

Emergency Pink Cards: They must be turned in to the Health Office the first week of each school year and updated through the year if information changes. We must have a local emergency contact person who can transport your child in the event a parent cannot be reached.

Medications: Any medication, prescription or over the counter, to be given in school must be brought to school in the original container. Prescription medications must have a label with exact dosage, name of medication, health care provider, and pharmacy. A physician’s order and signed parent consent must be received prior to any medication being dispensed. See below for medication  forms.

Allergies: We have many students in our school with different types of allergies, including food allergies. Please be sensitive to this issue prior to planning classroom parties or bringing in food. You can speak to the classroom teacher and/or myself with regard to potential risks.

When to Keep Your Child Home: In an effort to safeguard your child’s health and that of all the children here at Bishop Dunn we have a few suggestions that should be used as a reference to aid you in making a  decision regarding school attendance. STREP THROAT and any infection requiring antibiotic therapy, your child may return to school 24 to 48 hours after the 1st dose of antibiotics have started, provided they feel well and are fever free. FEVER Children should stay home if temperature is greater than 100 degrees. They may return when temperature is normal for 24 hours without the use of Motrin or Tylenol. VOMITING/DIARRHEA children should be symptom free 24 hours and able to hold down food and liquids before returning to school. CONJUNCTIVITIS/PINK EYE children need 3 doses of antibiotic drops and no drainage or crusting of the eyes before returning to school.

As stated in our student hand book, parents must phone the school in the morning if your child will be late or absent. In order for the absence to be excused, a note from the parent must be sent in upon your child’s return to school. The note must include the date(s) and reason for the absence. Your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated.
