Two residents recently discussed the local community garden movement during "The Good Food Project: Food Justice and Urban Farming," hosted on the campus of Mount Saint Mary College.
The talk was presented by Ed Manner from Edison Projects, an agency that is focused on Newburgh families, and Christine Hudson of Our Core Inc., a local organization that serves marginalized youth in Newburgh.
Manner and Hudson discussed issues related to nutritional food access, the local and regional food system, and opportunities to get involved in urban farming. Aside from increasing access to healthy foods, setting up community gardens in Newburgh can be a catalyst for residents feeling more ownership of, and pride in, the city, the pair explained.
The talk was sponsored by the college's First Year Experience (FYE) program and the division of Arts & Letters.
