MSMC students help sort hundreds of pounds of foodMount Saint Mary College students help sort hundreds of pounds of food on Friday, February 21, to be distributed to those in need through Newburgh’s St. Mary’s Church.

Before even the earliest of the college’s morning classes began on Friday, February 21, nearly a dozen Mount Saint Mary College students were volunteering at St. Mary’s Church in Newburgh, N.Y.

In a joint venture of the Mount’s School of Nursing and the college’s chapter of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Mount students helped pack and distribute food and clothing to the underserved population of the greater Newburgh area from about 7:30 a.m. to noon.

St. Mary’s outreach distributes fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, packaged and canned goods, and more, which are donated to them by local farms, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, and others. The church also distributes clothing to local residents in need. This outreach project serves hundreds of residents each month.

The Mount Nursing program fosters an environment of service and success that is focused on teaching students to care for their patients as well as the community. Mount Nursing students enjoy state-of-the-art simulation labs and clinical relationships with more than 40 area hospitals. The Mount’s passionate faculty are dedicated to the success of both their undergraduate and graduate students.
