Shane Bell '06 has been hired as the new Athletic Director at Mount Saint Mary College. He will begin on January 3, 2024.
Shane Bell has been hired as the new Athletic Director at Mount Saint Mary College, announced Elaine O’Grady, Vice President for Students.
Bell, a 2006 graduate of the Mount and a resident of Newburgh, brings with him more than a dozen years of experience as both an administrator and a student-athlete. He will begin his new post with the Knights on January 3, 2024.
“I am truly humbled and appreciative of the opportunity to come back to Mount Saint Mary College as the Director of Athletics,” Bell said. “I fell in love with the Mount when I was still in high school and my years as student-athlete at the college were some of the most rewarding of my life. The ability to come back to campus to lead this department, as we strive for academic and athletic success, is a privilege. My family and I are incredibly excited.”
Bell thanked O’Grady and Fr. Greg Fluet, Interim President of the Mount, for the opportunity. He also thanked Samantha Howe, Head Softball Coach; Trevor Purcell, Head Baseball Coach; Mike Lowell, Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach; Chris Lyn, Head Women’s Soccer Coach; and Scott Russell, Associate Professor of Sports Management and Business Graduate (MBA) Coordinator; for leading the search committee.
Bell comes to the Mount from the Army West Point Athletic Association. He spent 12 seasons with West Point and was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Operations and Event Management in 2019. He oversaw the event management department, including game day operations, scheduling, game contracts, and the hosting of conference and NCAA championships held at West Point, as well as neutral site competitions. In 2023, he assumed the additional responsibilities of overseeing facilities and capital projects.
While at West Point, Bell also played a critical role in the execution of the annual Army-Navy Football game and numerous Patriot League and Atlantic Hockey Association championships. He has also played an important role in hosting national and professional team visits, including the New York Yankees, New York Knicks, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, Team USA Basketball, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York City Football Club, and Atlanta Falcons visits.
At the Mount, Bell earned a degree in History with a minor in Political Science and was a four-year letterwinner on the Mount’s baseball team. He served as captain of the baseball team in 2005 and helped his teammates to become Skyline Conference Champions in 2003.
He also earned a Master’s degree in Sports Business Management from Manhattanville College in 2009.
Bell is married Jennifer (Van Tassel) Bell, a 2005 grad of the Mount. They have two children: Riley and Brady.
