Networking
Bachelor of Arts in Information Technology with a concentration in Networking
How do people get the information they need? They have networks to thank! Network specialists offer solutions for transmitting data electronically from one device to another. Through servers and network operating systems, networking involves sharing information around the world in an efficient and reliable way. Adding a concentration in Networking allows you to be a part of this integral information sharing process.
Why study Networking?
Here's what makes the mount's Networking program unique:
- Networking labs: You won’t just be reading from a textbook. Our dedicated networking labs allow you to try things hands on (which is the best way to learn Networking, in our opinion).
- Faculty professionals: Learning from those with experience in the field means the focus will be on practical skills versus theoretical knowledge. Find out what you really need to know for this field by learning from their experiences!
- Understand IT all: By having Networking as a concentration within the Information Technology major, you won’t just learn how technology is connected; you’ll also understand technology holistically, allowing you to repair, support, and administer it.
What to expect as a Networking student
24 credits in Information Technology | 24 credits in Networking | 2.0 GPA or higher
Learn about Networking academic requirements and courses here.
Your courses in Networking, enhancing what you learn in your general Information Technology classes, will focus on how to design, install, configure, and maintain commercial networks as well as cover server maintenance and administration. In addition to these courses, you’ll also have the opportunity for independent study, where you’ll work one-on-one with a professor on a topic of your choosing.
Those in our networking concentration are also highly encouraged to take advantage of internships and co-ops. These experiences are often paid, and many have led to job offers for our students. Plus, the real world, hands-on experience you receive through these experiences is invaluable! You’ll want to start talking to the Career Center early on in your studies to help you find the perfect experience (or experiences!).
Be prepared for your future
With your concentration in Networking, you’ll be particularly qualified for positions in network management, installation and administration, applications architecture, administration, business intelligence analysis, help desk (Tier 2), and consulting.
Your coursework in the concentration will prepare you for certification through the CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician) exam after graduation.
